The course is divided into four parts. The first introduces the basic concepts of microwaves, accelerator cavities, and rf superconductivity. From this follows the expected performance of superconducting rf (SRF) cavities. The second part is devoted to the observed behavior of SRF cavities, the reasons for the departures from the expected performance, followed by an in-depth study of the techniques to overcome the performance limitations. In the third part, we cover the critical components associated with the use of SRF cavities in accelerators (including tuners and input and output couplers), using representative examples from various applications. In the final part we discuss applications of SRF to future frontier accelerators, from high current electron machines to the TeV linear collider. Problems will be assigned throughout the course and will be discussed during recitation sections. Requirements: familiarity with electromagnetism, including waveguides and cavity resonators, at the level of Ramo and Whinnery is desirable.
