Online Summer 2022 USPAS Session

Session Details:
Due to pandemic-induced travel restrictions for some instructors and students, we are moving our school online again. To accommodate the constraints of online learning, we are shortening the lecture hours per day to about half and doubling the number of days of our usual sessions. Full courses that were 2-weeks in duration at in-person sessions are now 4-weeks. Half courses that were 1-week in duration at in-person sessions are now 2-weeks. Courses will be conducted via Zoom videoconference software. Lectures will start at 10:00 am CDT in a first “morning” session of approximately 2 hours, followed by a "lunch" break and an “afternoon” session. The duration and timing of these will be variable. But students should expect a 5-hour daily window starting at 10:00 am CDT to be filled by lectures, recitations, online labs, and the break. Instructors will schedule additional evening homework sessions with instructor, teaching assistant and grader help available to students. Specific class schedules and further details will be provided to enrolled students as we move forward.

Please note: the online format is intensive. Students should plan on 4+ hours per day of Zoom-based lectures, recitations, labs and homework help sessions plus additional time to study and carry out daily homework, project activities, and exams. Those planning concurrent work and study activities with the session should evaluate loads carefully.

Since most class lectures and labs as well as plenary school functions will be recorded, all participants will be asked to sign a "Consent to Be Recorded" waiver.

Class sizes are limited. Priority will be given to those who enroll for a grade/credit and auditors will be considered for admission on a space-available basis. We anticipate videos of most courses will be posted and those wishing to informally audit can do so after the session. Those unwilling or unable to enroll for credit (including international students not currently enrolled in a U.S. university) will be accepted on a case-by-case basis.

Participation is open to both U.S. and non-U.S. residents. International participants not currently residing in the U.S. may apply to attend the program and may request a scholarship but they may not earn credit from Michigan State University. They may ask that their performance be rated and when the session is over the USPAS will provide a letter confirming participation and rating.

University and college students and postdocs within 5 years of graduation may request a scholarship. Students receiving a scholarship are expected to take their course for a grade / credit. Scholarships will be awarded without regard to race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation or national origin. Consideration will be given to balancing class sizes. To encourage the participation of identities historically underrepresented in Accelerator Science and Engineering, we offer the Sekazi K. Mtingwa Scholarship. All scholarship requests and supporting documents must be received by April 20, 2022. Supporting documents are only required from students who request a scholarship.
