Storage Rings as Sources of Synchrotron Radiation
Richard Talman, Cornell University
The use of electron storage rings (such as CESR/CHESS) to produce beams of photons will be surveyed, ranging from fundamental theory to practical design and applications. Topics include electron and photon beam characteristics; synchrotron radiation: angular, spectral and statistical properties; synchrotron light as a storage ring diagnostic; synchrotron radiation influence on circulating beams, emittance reduction by strong focusing and specialized lattices; wigglers, undulators and free electron lasers; and orbit stabilization. Prerequisites: Intermediate Electromagnetism and Mechanics. Previous enrollment in "Accelerator Fundamentals" would be helpful, but not essential, as the material will be reviewed.
