General Program Information

COVID-19 Update:

Our summer 2020 session with Stony Brook University is being postponed to June 14-25, 2021. We will use the same Melville, NY venue and we anticipate that the course offerings and format of the session will remain largely the same. Students will need to re-apply to the postponed session, but we will honor application support materials (cover letter, letter of recommendation, CV) submitted for summer 2020.  The next USPAS session will be winter 2021, to be held January 25 - February 5, 2021 in Houston, Texas.  Details will be forthcoming.

Courses run in parallel so students may take one two-week full course OR two one-week half courses. Each two-week course is eligible for 3 units of credit from Stony Brook University

June 15-26, 2020

Students successfully completing one half course each week will earn 3 units of graduate credit from Stony Brook University.

June 15-19, 2020

June 22-26, 2020

Participation is open to both U.S. and non-U.S. citizens. International participants not currently residing in the U.S. may apply to attend the program and may request financial sponsorship but they may not earn credit from Stony Brook University. Note: International participants are joining our program as a "short recreational not-for-credit participant". The USPAS is not a course of full-time study and international attendees are not able to earn university credit so an F1 student visa is not appropriate. We believe that a B1 visa or admission under the visa waiver program is appropriate (whichever is most suitable to your situation). Please check the Department of State's Visa Wizard for the latest updates and to find out if you require a visa to enter the U.S. Anyone traveling under Visa Waiver must apply for authorization through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

International participants requesting a scholarship who are not from U.S. visa-waiver countries must already be in possession of a visa that is valid for the entire period of the USPAS session. A copy of your visa must be postal mailed or faxed to 630-840-8500 before the March 11, 2020 deadline date. It is not safe to email your passport number.

Scholarships requests are due by March 11, 2020. In addition to the application form please submit a cover letter explaining why the USPAS is important to your career and describing prior research experience, work with or as a user of particle accelerators; your CV; one letter of recommendation. All of these documents should be emailed to uspas@fnal.gov. USPAS scholarships are awarded without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation or national origin. Consideration will be given to balancing class sizes.

TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY: The Division of Physics of Beams (DPB) of the American Physical Society is offering a limited number of travel scholarships to USPAS students. Applicants must be members of the DPB (note that student membership is free for the first year). The DPB scholarship will cover travel expenses and your USPAS scholarship will cover housing and your registration fee. Scholarship amounts will vary based on points of travel origin. These scholarships are open to domestic and international students who meet the usual USPAS scholarship requirements (required documents listed above). You can enroll for DPB membership at https://www.aps.org/membership/ and more details on eligibility and the selection criteria can be found at DPB Scholarship Details. Note that DPB membership will be verified prior to an applicant being considered.

DPB Travel Scholarship Deadline is March 11, 2020.
