Course:

Introduction to RF Systems in Accelerators

Instructors:

Shane Koscielniak, TRIUMF and Mikhail D'yachkov, University of British Columbia

The course will give an account of commonly used accelerating cavity structures and will contain an introduction to longitudinal beam dynamics in cyclic proton accelerators. The LCR model of the fundamental mode and coupling to beam and generator will be discussed. After an introduction to the Laplace transform in system control and stability, standard methods of closed loop beam control in synchrotrons will be elaborated. The course continues with a study of beam loading of the fundamental mode, the Robinson instability and compensation techniques. The problem sets will include applications to medium energy proton synchrotrons. The student should have some familiarity with introductory accelerator physics and intermediate electricity and magnetism.
